What do I want to do with my life?

That was the cliche question I asked myself as I walked up the stairs of the RSC, on my way to the criminal justice job fair. Maybe this job fair will be able to help me answer that.

Is this going to be intimidating? Another question in my head. A room full of law enforcement, probation officers, DEA, and FBI intimidating? No way.

Why is this my major? I wondered, looking around the room meekly at all these important people. I’m no angel, I’ve broken my share of laws, I don’t even like cops (harsh, but true… they psych me out). So why am I studying to, if not be one, then work with them on a day to day basis? Is this where my heart is at?

The truth is, I didn’t know. The job fair is long overwith, and I still have no answers to any of those questions. All I know about myself so far is that I have a purpose. I know I’m smart, driven, and have lots of people I can’t let down. I know I’m fair, honest, and believe at the end of the day, justice will be served.

So maybe I did belong in that room with those important people that day, for whatever reason. I might graduate, work, and decide criminal justice is where I belong. I might go to law school. I might never use this criminal justice degree I’m working so hard for, my purpose might be something else all along. All that matters is that I know I have one. As for what it is, I guess I’ll just have to figure it out when I get there.

I’m in Mazatlàn, Mexico for spring break. Last night (night #2), a friend we met at the reggae club invited us to go hiking. The worlds’s tallest natural lighthouse is here, on top of a mountain, and our new friend was going to take us to climb to it.

The hike is pretty tedious, there’s a winding road trail, but for riskier hikers (who are also willing to risk their freedom, we found out; our hike today was actually illegal) there’s a steeper and more challenging way the top.

That’s the way we took today, and a few cuts and scrapes, 400 steps, and three hours worth of rock climbing later, we made it up the top, and back down to a secret cove on the back side of the mountain.

Moral of this random story? Well, my body hurts, my cuts from cactus thorns still hurt, but I’m so proud of what I did today! We did some WORK today climbing that mountain, and it was cool to do something I’ve never done in a part of the world where I’ve never been. I feel overwhelmed when I think about how grateful to be at where I am at this moment. That’s it really. All it’s taken is a couple of awesome days down here to figure it out.

Maybe everyone needs a little Mazatlàn and mountain tops in their life, too.
